Border-Gavaskar Trophy: Legendary Indian cricket captain Sunil Gavaskar took a sharp jab at the Australian media following India’s remarkable 295-run victory over Australia in the first Test in Perth. India outclassed Australia to take a 1-0 lead in the five-match series, and Gavaskar recalled how the Australian media had frequently criticized Indian cricket and players in the past. He pointed out that India’s victory in Perth served as a direct rebuttal to those criticisms.

Gavaskar reflected on India’s only previous win in Perth, which came in the 2007-08 series, immediately following the infamous Andrew Symonds-Harbhajan Singh controversy. He reminded viewers that during this period of Australian dominance, Australia had gone undefeated for about 10-15 years, and such a heavy defeat was rare for them. He also highlighted how the Australian media had even questioned Suryakumar Yadav’s catch in the 2024 T20 World Cup final, further criticizing Indian cricket.

Gavaskar said, “After the West Indies’ dominance, Australia ruled for about 10-15 years without facing a defeat as heavy as this. Remember India’s win in Perth in 2007-08 came right after the Harbhajan-Symonds controversy, followed by harsh criticism from the Australian media.”

He continued, “So, that win in Perth, and now this one, shows that every time the Australian media criticizes India… remember how they questioned Suryakumar Yadav’s catch in the T20 World Cup final. How can anyone sitting in Australia question if his feet touched the ground? Our team has shown that we’re capable of thrashing you in this series.”

Meanwhile, BCCI vice-president Rajeev Shukla praised India’s massive win in the Perth Test. Despite being bowled out for just 150 in their first innings, India bounced back to win by 295 runs, marking a stunning turnaround from their series loss to New Zealand at home.

Speaking to ANI, Rajeev Shukla emphasized the significance of the victory, commending the performance of both the Indian bowlers and batters. He also confirmed that Rohit Sharma would play in the second Test and continue as captain for the match against Australia.

“The victory in Perth is highly significant. Our bowlers and batsmen performed excellently… Rohit Sharma will be playing as captain in the second Test,” Rajeev Shukla stated.
