The Chennai Super Kings, who were once an unstoppable force in the Indian Premier League, are now on the brink of elimination from the 2025 season. With only two victories from nine matches, CSK’s season has gone off the rails, and although there is a mathematical possibility of playoff qualification, the reality indicates that their quest is effectively over.
CSK’s Struggle In IPL 2025
A range of factors has been behind CSK’s poor performance this year. Suspect choices during the auction, injuries including to their captain and the diminishing influence of MS Dhoni have all contributed. Even after Dhoni took over as captain during the mid-season, the change has failed to change the fortunes of the franchise. In fact, ever since the leadership change, CSK has failed to record even a single win.

MS Dhoni Failed To Make An Impact
MS Dhoni, aged 43 now, has found it difficult to make an impact with the bat. He has managed just 140 runs this year and is still struggling with persistent knee problems that restrict his movement and confine his batting to lower down the order usually No. 7 or even 9. Head coach Stephen Fleming has again conceded that Dhoni cannot bat for long periods physically, something that has annoyed fans eager to see him produce flashes of his former magic.
Adam Gilchrist Wants MS Dhoni To Retire
Reacting to CSK’s struggles, Adam Gilchrist shared a honest opinion. While he respects Dhoni’s contribution to the IPL and CSK, Gilchrist believes it’s time for the legend to step away.
“The big one, MS Dhoni. He has nothing more to prove to anyone in the game. He has achieved everything that there is. MS… well, he’ll know what he wants to do, but I’m saying, for the future – it’s going to cost me this, I know – but he perhaps doesn’t need to be there next year. I love you, MS. You are a champion, an icon,” Gilchrist said on Cricbuzz.
