Border-Gavaskar Trophy: Cameron Green’s Participation Under Doubt Due To THIS Reason

Cameron Green is a huge asset for Australia as he is a great all-rounder option and his credentials as a straight batter could be seen particularly when he was named man-of-the-match in the first Test against New Zealand in March where he plundered a career-best 174 not out.

Cameron Green’s participation in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy series remains in the doubt as the rising allrounder is contemplating to go under surgery to cure his serious back problem. Back surgeries for a few Australian fast bowlers had worked wonders in reviving their careers when the condition was at its worst.Over the next few days, Green is to reach a decision whether he’ll be going through the surgery or not, according to cricket.com.au

Cameron Green Likely To Undergo Back Surgery

Green would miss the Border-Gavaskar Trophy series against India and the subsequent Sri Lanka tour if he were to undergo surgery. Or, he could choose to rehabilitate his lower back after a stress fracture that was diagnosed as part of Australia’s recently concluded limited-overs series in the UK. Interestingly, scans taken just months ago had shown nothing amiss.

The 25-year-old recently met with Australian team officials and has been left with a surgery-or-rehabilitation choice.

Cameron Green: An Explosive Batter For Australia

Interestingly, his Test selection doesn’t depend entirely on his bowling abilities; he could still play as a pure batter if he decides not to go under the surgeon’s knife. His credentials as a straight batter came out particularly when he was named man-of-the-match in the first Test against New Zealand in March where he plundered a career-best 174 not out.

Another factor to weigh is whether Mitch Marsh, currently occupying the No. 6 spot, can effectively take on Green’s bowling responsibilities. The Western Australian hasn’t bowled in the ongoing match against Queensland and has rarely bowled while captaining Australia’s white-ball teams this past winter.

For Green, there are also significant long-term considerations to take into account. Since his debut in international cricket in 2020, the Perth native has enjoyed a relatively injury-free journey, which highlights Cricket Australia’s effective medical management as he has progressed to become a player in all formats.

Cameron Green’s Interest In Playing As Pure Batter

Cameron Green told cricket.com.au that he is interested in playing as a specialist batter and this was something he’ll be looking at more clearly in future.

“I’ve thought about it as an ‘in 10 years’ time’ sort of thing,” Green said when asked if he would consider giving away – or at least consider deprioritising – a bowling career that has so far netted him 35 Test wickets at 35.31.

“Down the track it’s definitely an option but at the moment I’m very happy to be a genuine allrounder.”
