Lucknow Super Giants’ young spinner Digvesh Rathi has rapidly become one of the new faces to watch in the Indian Premier League (IPL), courtesy of his incisive bowling and show-stopping “notebook” celebration that has attracted both attention and BCCI disciplinary action. Behind the glare, though, is a tale of grit, adversity, and unwavering perseverance.
Digvesh Singh Rathi’s Struggle
Digvesh’s older brother, Sunny, recently spoke about the struggles of the family, remembering how they were once told to quit Delhi because of a lack of money. In spite of all odds being against him, Digvesh did not lose sight of his cricketing ambition, going through hard times with unflinching determination.
“No Money Or Influence” Says Rathi’s Brother
“Digvesh had no godfather, we had no money or influence. We were advised to move out of Delhi. Par bhag kyun jaye (but why would we run away)?” Sunny, who now works as a police constable at the Mandoli Prison Complex, told The Indian Express.
“I Would Bowl Him For Hours”
“When it was Digvesh’s turn to bat, most of the good bowlers were disinterested in bowling because he wasn’t a known name. When he played good strokes against them, their ego was hurt too. Players brought their own cricket balls, so they didn’t want to waste it on him. I would bowl to him for hours but facing only one bowler limits a batsman,” Sunny said.
Digvesh Singh Rathi Influenced By Sunil Narine
A batter by origin, Digvesh turned to spin bowling due to limited chances to practice batting in the nets. Influenced by West Indies star Sunil Narine, he started imitating the great spinner’s bowling action and strategy, a decision that would chart his career course.
