At only 24 years of age, Gill has become an imposing figure on the field, taking strong tactical calls and even holding his ground in fiery confrontations with match officials. Although his captaincy debut last season did not deliver the returns he had hoped for, Gill has improved his lot this season due to wiser planning and a better-balanced side.

“He’s an outstanding batsman and really has a bright future as far as his batting is concerned, but what’s pleasing to see is that he’s growing as far as leadership is concerned, and he’s really grown into the role of captaincy. So that’s great to see,” said Solanki in the pre-game press conference.

“When you have somebody who is as gifted, as talented, and as exceptional as Shubman is as a batsman, sometimes you might have concerns about whether the weight of leadership would bear heavy. I don’t think that’s been the case. I think you sometimes see that people thrive in those sorts of responsibility roles, and Shubman certainly has done that,” he added.

Solanki expressed his pleasure at Gill’s leadership development as a natural step up from his already strong cricketing resume. He recognized that not all elite batters have the capability to carry the load of captaincy, but was keen to highlight that Gill has taken up the challenge with conviction, adding strength to his individual performance as well as his role as a team influencer.
