Here’s Why Akashdeep’s Test Career Might Be Short-Lived

In 7 Test matches Akashdeep has 15 wickets at an average of 35.20 and now a big question looms for how long can he sustain himself in Test format.

Akashdeep only took five wickets in two Tests with an average of 54. What could be perhaps considered one of the unluckiest performances by the pacer is when he bowled in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy between India and Australia. Except perhaps a spell with Australia’s second innings at MCG, everywhere Akash hit good lines regularly produced chances-beating the batters, yet the wickets did not come. Edges flew through the slip cordon or did not carry, and close calls for LBW were dismissed by the umpire’s call.

Akashdeep’s Poor Run In Border-Gavaskar Trophy

Unfortunately, Akash was ruled out of the final Test in Sydney due to a back injury. This led to discussions about whether his name would even be considered when the selectors gathered for India’s forthcoming tour to England, six months down the line. At 28, Akash is entering what should be the peak of his career as a fast bowler. A senior BCCI official said that if he struggles to capitalize on opportunities at this stage, his prospects of a long international career could be in jeopardy.

Why Akashdeep Might Not Be Able To Sustain For Long In Tests?

“In Melbourne, he was sometimes pitching it either too short or too fall. Besides, given his age, if he’s in and out (of the XI) at his age, that could go on to be the difference,” a BCCI official told The Telegraph on Monday.

“And then, he has a dodgy back which has been troubling him even before his Bengal debut (in 2019). That’s also another thing he has to look after.”

Overall in 7 Test matches Akashdeep has 15 wickets at an average of 35.20.
