England all-rounder Jos Buttler has expressed his backing of Shubman Gill as India’s next Test captain, hailing the young batsman’s leadership skills before high-stakes Test series commencing on June 20. Gill, 25, took the charge after Rohit Sharma retired from the Tests and will be India’s captain in Tests for the first time in the upcoming five-match series against England.
Talking about Gill being elevated as captain, Buttler, who had the dressing room privilege with the Indian batter at Gujarat Titans in IPL 2025, stated that he thinks Gill possesses the necessary ingredients to lead in the red-ball format successfully.

“Yeah, there’s a lot of buzz around this series. The IPL just finished, but even during that, there was huge interest in who’d become India’s next captain. Shubman Gill is now leading the side. He was my captain at Gujarat Titans—an impressive player and a really mature young man,” said Buttler in a podcast with Stuart Broad.
“He’s calm and measured when he speaks. But on the field, he has fight and intensity. He’s passionate. I think he’ll be a mix of Kohli and Rohit. Kohli brought aggression and in-your-face competitiveness, while Rohit is more laid-back—cool, calm, and collected. Shubman feels like he’s somewhere in between. He’s learned from both, but he’s also his own man,” he added.
