‘Lalit Modi Threatened To End My Career’, Reveals Former RCB Player

He also revealed that ball-tampering was a widespread practice among players, noting that Pakistani bowlers were particularly adept at it.

Former Indian fast bowler Praveen Kumar recently made startling revelations in a media interview, asserting that during his playing days, ball-tampering was a common practice among bowlers. He specifically pointed out that Pakistani bowlers engaged in it more than others to enhance reverse swing. Praveen, who played for Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) in the first season of the Indian Premier League (IPL), also claimed that Lalit Modi, the former IPL chairman, threatened to bring an end to his cricketing career. These revelations provide insight into the controversial practices and challenges faced by players during that period in the cricketing world.

“I did not want to play for RCB because Bangalore was quite far away from my place, I didn’t know English, and the food was not to my liking. Delhi is quite close to Meerut, which would have allowed me to travel to my home once in a while. However, there was a person who made me sign a paper. I did not know it was the contract. I told them I wanted to play for Delhi and not Bangalore. Lalit Modi called me and threatened to end my career,” Praveen said in the interview.

During the 1990s, reverse swing became a potent weapon for fast bowlers, with Pakistan’s bowlers earning a reputation for their mastery of this skill.
