RCB Victory Celebration Turns Tragic: How Did The Bengaluru Stampede Happen?

The celebration had to be cut short within ten minutes of its commencement as the swelling crowd presented a serious safety hazard.

A victory celebration turned tragic in Bengaluru on Wednesday when a stampede outside the M Chinnaswamy Stadium resulted in ten deaths and more than 20 injuries. What was supposed to be a joyful night to celebrate the first-ever IPL title of Royal Challengers Bengaluru turned into nightmare and tragedy.

Massive Crowd Overwhelms Security Outside Stadium

Thousands of Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) fans had congregated outside the stadium hours earlier than the team’s arrival, ready to get a glimpse of their idols with the IPL 2025 trophy. The huge crowd, however, created bottlenecks at some of the entrances, leading to a fatal stampede.

Police found it difficult to handle the crowd and tried to take charge of the situation. Six people died on the spot and some died later from injuries. Over 20 people were taken to Bowring Hospital for treatment.

RCB Felicitated at Vidhana Soudha

Earlier during the day, the Karnataka government organized a ceremonial function to felicitate the RCB team, who bagged their maiden IPL title after 18 long years. The team, led by captain Rajat Patidar, was felicitated at the grand staircase of Vidhana Soudha, the state legislative and administrative complex. Karnataka Governor Thawar Chand Gehlot, Chief Minister Siddaramaiah, and Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar praised RCB after their maiden IPL victory.

Celebration Cut Briefly Amid Safety Fears

In spite of repeated assurances by police to calm down and not resort to forceful entry, the public became increasingly agitated. Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar confirmed that the celebration had to be cut short within ten minutes of its commencement as the swelling crowd presented a serious safety hazard.
