Sri Lankan captain Angelo Mathews is poised to say goodbye to the sport of Test cricket, with his last match being against Bangladesh in Galle from Tuesday, June 17. Ahead of this sentimental moment, Indian captain Rohit Sharma sent out his heartfelt greetings to the seasoned all-rounder in the form of a moving video message.
Rohit, who has played alongside Mathews from their U-19 days, lauded the Sri Lankan legend for his efforts to the longest version of the game. In a Newswire video, Rohit stated, Mathews retires as one of Sri Lanka’s greatest Test players. With 8,167 runs to his credit, he is third in the nation’s all-time run-scorers’ list for the format behind legends Mahela Jayawardene and Kumar Sangakkara. The Galle Test will be his chance to further entrench himself in the annals of cricket history and bow out of the red-ball game in style with a win.
âHey Angie, congratulations on your fantastic Test career. Tomorrow is your last Test match, I just want to wish you and the team the very best,” Rohit was seen saying in a video published by Newswire. “Over the years we’ve had really good battles right from our under-19 days till now. Youâve been a true servant to your nation and Iâm pretty sure everyone back at home appreciates what youâve done for your country.
“It is something which is not been achieved by many people, what you have achieved, so congratulations again on that and moving forward I just want to wish you also and your family the very very best. Happy retirement, enjoy it and we’ll see you on the other side, bro. All the best,” Rohit added.
