Virat Kohli unexpectedly decided to retire from the Test format on May 12, 2025 even though it was considered he could go on playing in the format for few more years. Known for his passion for the format, he not only led fiercely but also played a significant role after relinquishing from the leadership role.
Geoffrey Boycott weighed in on his retirement and suggested that the demands of India’s packed international schedule might have taken a toll on Kohli and resulted in this decision. The reason behind his departure still remains speculative and no concrete answer has been given, Kohli will now only be seen in the ODI Format.

“With so much international cricket played by India, and so little rest, it takes its toll and the mind becomes fatigued. It does not matter how much talent or experience you have, if you are not mentally fresh and up for the challenge, then it becomes draining,” Boycott wrote for The Telegraph.
According to the former England Cricketer, when the rest is very less and the schedule is absolutely busy then it takes a toll on the mind of cricketer. In Virat’s case also he was playing without break and this might have resulted in this big decision to retire. India will now be playing five-match Test series against England with the first Test starting from June 20 at Headingley.
