Chennai Super Kings (CSK) assistant coach Sridharan Sriram revealed that the franchise remains uncertain about MS Dhoni’s future in the Indian Premier League, with no official word from the veteran wicketkeeper-batter ahead of their final league match against Gujarat Titans on Sunday, May 25, in Ahmedabad.
Speculation around Dhoni’s retirement has intensified as CSK approaches the close of their 2025 campaign. However, Dhoni has confirmed that he hasn’t made a decision yet and will take the next eight months to assess how he feels before committing to IPL 2026.
Speaking at a pre-match press conference, Sriram acknowledged that even within the camp, there is no clarity on Dhoni’s plans.
“As far as I know, there’s no update. I genuinely don’t know what he’s planning,” said Sriram when asked if Dhoni was considering retirement.
Sriram added that despite the uncertainty, CSK’s leadership group – including head coach Stephen Fleming, captain Ruturaj Gaikwad, and Dhoni – is aligned on what went wrong this season and what needs to be fixed going forward.
“The positive is that Fleming, MS, and Ruturaj all have a strong understanding of the issues we’ve faced. They’re clear on the direction we need to take from here, and that’s a big plus,” he noted.

‘Unfair to Blame Just the Middle Order’
CSK’s campaign hasn’t lived up to expectations this season, and while the middle order has come under scrutiny, Sriram believes the problems go deeper than that.
“Everyone knows this season hasn’t gone how we hoped,” he said. “It’s not just about the middle order. It’s about how we played as a unit throughout the season and the outcomes we’ve seen. So I think it’s unfair to point to any one area in particular.”
