Leading from the front, Gill’s classy and collected innings provided India with a solid platform and reminded the world of his class and increasing status in world cricket.
Right from the beginning, Gill was in charge – his foot movement was confident, his selection of shots impeccable, and the English bowlers could not disrupt his flow. As he raised his bat to celebrate a well-deserved hundred, it was not just an individual achievement – it was a record-breaking knock that put his name in the record books in multiple categories.

Record-Breaking Achievements by Shubman Gill
Equal Second-Most Test Hundreds for India Under 25
Gill’s new century puts him in the company of legends such as Virender Sehwag and Ravi Shastri with seven Test centuries before the age of 26. Only the legendary Sachin Tendulkar is ahead of them, with a staggering 19 Test tons scored before he was 26.
Third-Most International Centuries for India at 25 or Younger
With this blow, Gill registered his 16th international century across formats, third on India’s all-time list of players under the age of 25. Only Sachin Tendulkar (40) and Virat Kohli (26) had more at this age, highlighting Gill’s emergence as a multi-format player.
Fifth Indian to Score Centuries in Three Consecutive Tests vs England
Gill’s hundred at Birmingham is the fifth occurrence of an Indian batsman scoring centuries in three consecutive Tests against England. His streak started in Dharamshala, then in Headingley, and now here at Edgbaston. Only Azharuddin, Vengsarkar, and Rahul Dravid (both times) are legends who have done something similar to this.
Third Indian Captain with Back-to-Back Centuries vs England
Gill has also become the third Indian captain to make hundreds in successive Tests against England. He follows Vijay Hazare (1951â52) and Mohammad Azharuddin (1990) into this rarefied club.
Fourth Indian Captain with Hundreds in First Two Tests as Skipper
Scoring a century in both of his first two Tests as captain, Gill is now equal to Hazare, Gavaskar, and Kohli, making him just the fourth Indian captain to begin their captaincy career with back-to-back centuries.
Joint Third-Most Centuries in Tests from Captaincy Debut
With two centuries in his first two Tests in charge, Gill joins Hazare, Gavaskar, Kohli, and Jackie McGlew. Only Alastair Cook (five) and Steve Smith (three) have scored more centuries in their first Tests as captain.
Second Indian Captain to Score a Test Hundred at Edgbaston
Gill is now in the company of Virat Kohli, becoming just the second Indian skipper to score a Test hundred at Edgbaston. Kohliâs memorable 149 in 2018 is considered one of his finest, and Gillâs effort will now be remembered alongside it.
Shubman Gill’s performance at Edgbaston was not about scoring runs, it was a show of leadership, maturity, and unshakable temperament in crisis. Records falling and milestones piling up, Gill’s captaincy career has started in sensational fashion, and India appears well-prepared under his leadership.
