Jose Mourinho currently negotiates with the Portuguese Football Federation for the national team coaching position with potential rewards of reuniting Cristiano Ronaldo for the 2026 FIFA World Cup in North America. After stating his desire to take the Portugal national team helm back in 2019 Jose Mourinho now seeks the coach position at Fenerbahçe in Türkiye and expressed his wish to lead his country before retirement. The partnership between the Portuguese federation and Mourinho shows increasing signs of leading him toward taking charge as national team manager.

Jose Mourinho’s chance to lead Portugal’s national team has become firmly established after he exploded after Fenerbahçe’s 3-3 draw against Kayserispor which damaged their championship aspirations. The clash between Fenerbahçe’s current three-point deficit and their six remaining matches has led to mounting doubts about Mourinho’s future at Fenerbahçe. CNN Portugal reports that despite having a contract until 2026 the Portuguese Football Federation is making systematic attempts to replace Roberto Martínez with Jose Mourinho. Mourinho might return to partner with Cristiano Ronaldo since both achieved great success during their time at Real Madrid from 2010 to 2013.

During their three season collaboration at Real Madrid between 2010 and 2013 Mourinho and Ronaldo achieved remarkable results along with fierce competitions. Mourinho’s tactical direction made Real Madrid achieved a La Liga victory during the 2011/12 campaign having amassed 100 league points through 38 matches where they won 32 matches and drew 4 times and lost only 2 resulting in a 2.63 average point total each match.
