GMR And JSW Groups Announce Management Changes For Delhi Capitals In IPL

GMR and JSW Groups announce management changes for Delhi Capitals, with Sourav Ganguly taking on a new role and Rishabh Pant's future uncertain.

The GMR and JSW Groups are co-owners of the Delhi Capitals franchise in the Indian Premier League (IPL). On October 17, the two groups issued a joint statement related to new management changes that will soon take place in the team. This was after earlier reports by Cricbuzz on several appointments and restructures of leadership positions, mainly relative to Sourav Ganguly.

Sourav Ganguly’s Position With The Franchise

Former India captain Sourav Ganguly will remain associated with Delhi Capitals but in a different capacity. He will not remain a front-line man with the IPL side but be the director of cricket for Pretoria Capitals in the SA20 league and Delhi Capitals in the Women’s Premier League in the next two years.

It is a change since Ganguly shares connections with the JSW Group, which will revert to handling the team after two years. However, the task will be performed by the GMR Group which has Kiran Kumar Grandhi at its head. Y Venugopal Rao and Hemang Badani would be in charge.

Ganguly To The IPL Auction

Ganguly will attend the IPL auction but won’t be playing the role. Player auctions and retention will be decisions taken together by the two groups of ownership. However, the joint statement, clarified that “key decisions like auctions, captaincy, player releases, and retentions for both teams will be made by the Delhi Capitals’ board, with mutual agreement between the senior leadership of both groups.” Ganguly will be present in the auction alongside Parth Jindal, head of JSW, though the extent of his influence on the critical decision-making process remains obscure.

Future Of Rishabh Pant

In the case of Rishabh Pant, the GMR Group is not commenting as he is away on national duty for the ongoing Test against New Zealand. They are waiting for his feedback regarding retention. The scenario appears to be positive for Pant to stay with the franchise for a longer term, though there is some concern in the minds of people about his stay as a captain.

Overview Of Joint Statement

The GMR and JSW Groups issued a joint statement announcing the rotational management structure for the Delhi Capitals IPL (Men) and Delhi Capitals WPL (Women) for the next two years, aimed at bringing out better operational efficiency across the two teams. For this period, GMR Group shall manage the cricketing operations for the Delhi Capitals Men team and JSW Sports shall deal with the Women’s team.

This deal will change in 2027 when JSW Sports will handle the Men’s team. Business operations for the franchise will remain with the management team of Delhi Capitals.
