Indian Veteran Batter Virender Sehwag Opens Up And Says THIS Player Inspired Him To Play Cricket

The Indian veteran batter opened up about his inspiration to start playing cricket.

In a recent Netflix documentary, The Greatest Rivalry: India Vs Pakistan, the Indian veteran batter opened up about his inspiration to start playing cricket. He revealed that Sachin Tendulkar was the one who he considers his hero and his batting inspired him to play cricket. He also mentions the 1992 World Cup where Pakistan emerged victorious.

Sachin was my hero. The 1992 World Cup was the first time I actually got to watch him play. I remember that i used to wake up at 5:30 am to watch the match. When he came on to bat, I’d try to copy his batting. And I’d tell myself I’m going to be like Sachin.”

Sachin and Sehwag

Sachin and Sehwag both adopted an aggressive approach towards the bowlers. They became the feared opening pair for the Indian cricket team in the ODI format. They were also the first choice as openers for India in 2003 and 2011 World Cups. Though it was interesting to see that Sehwag was opening in ODI was with Sourabh Ganguly as Sachin got injured. He first opened in ODI in July 2001 during a tri-series against New Zealand and Sri Lanka.

Their combination of explosive batting and tactical skills made them a formidable opening pair. They scored 3919 runs in 93 ODI innings with 12 century partnerships and 18 half century partnerships. They also played a key role in 2011 World Cup.

The 1992 World Cup

Although Pakistan won the 1992 World Cup, but during the match between India and Pakistan, the Indians defeated the men in green by 43 runs with Sachin Tendulkar being awarded as the player of the match. He scored 54 not out in 62 deliveries and also secured one wicket of Aamir Sohail
