Mumbai Indians remained on their way to a historic IPL title by beating Gujarat Titans by 20 runs in the IPL 2025 Eliminator. In a close one at Mullanpur, the men led by Hardik Pandya proved strong under pressure and beat the 2022 champions to move on to Qualifier 2 and meet Punjab Kings.
Mumbai Indians post a mammoth Total
After winning the toss on a flat ground, the MI captain, Hardik Pandya, chose to bat first and this proved a good call. Thanks to a fine innings of 81 runs from Rohit Sharma, Mumbai made a total of 228/5 after 20 overs. Hardik’s innings set the stage which was complemented by rapid runs from Tilak Varma, Suryakumar Yadav and others, allowing MI to reach a highly impressive total in an IPL knockout match.

While GT got good starts from their batters, Mumbai’s middle order stepped up at the key moment to maintain momentum during the innings.

Valiant Chase of GT
Gujarat Titans could only reach 208/6 and lost the match by 20 runs. It was not a good start for Gujarat after Shubman Gill fell early, but Sai Sudharsan (80) and Kusal Mendis worked together to stabilize the team. Sudharsan particularly provided some key contributions, making things difficult for MI and helping GT stay involved. Mendis had been playing confidently, but then he was dismissed after grazing his foot on his wicket, ending the Titans’ good run.
The Bumrah effect
While the match was still undecided, MI called on Jasprit Bumrah and he came through for the team again. A fiery yorker bowled by Jasprit Bumrah got rid of Sundar and changed the momentum for India. Bumrah changing the game with his bowling was key and he pulled through to choke GT’s good runs during the last overs of the innings.
