Ravichandran Ashwin has heavily criticised ICC rules about using maximum two new balls in an ODIs questioning whether it will affect the future of 50-over game. Former Indian spinner was of the view that the rule (since implemented pre 2015) was conceived to check the supremacy of spin in Indian team. He has also raised some doubts with the way the regulation has five fielders inside the circle, I feel that has completely taken away the spinners from ODIs and is out of balance.
Ashwin Criticizes Two New Balls Rule In ODIs
Ravichandran Ashwin, in a video posted on his You tube channel took the ICC to task for introducing of two new balls in ODIs and that this has drastically changed the game as he sees it. His point being before 2013-14, there was only one ball in ODIs and therefore allowed reverse swing which created more scope for finger spin. But Ashwin says India was already in decline as a spin force because of the new law under way before 2015. He said “I think, in many ways, that rule was to nullify India’s spin domination. That is just my take.”
Ashwin Questions The Relevance Of The 50-Over Format
Ashwin has also challenged the 50-over format, saying it is monotonous and lacks pace. He reminded the moment which made him ponder about the ODIs and to come future of Champions Trophy between Afghanistan vs England. He also raised a red flag over the ridiculousness of the 2027 ODI World Cup though. He stated that “The 50-over World Cup (2027) in South Africa is going to be a real challenge for the ICC. It is at the brink of a decision being made. Because the game is going so slow, it’s meandering along.” Talking about the past formats he added “There used to be a time where one-day used to be played with the red ball. It is time to seriously give it a thought about this particular format of the game.”
