Rishabh Pant Injury Update: Why Dhruv Jurel Cannot Bat As A Replacement? The ICC rules States That..

For the majority of the day’s play, Dhruv Jurel took over wicketkeeping duties as Rishabh Pant stayed off the field undergoing medical treatment.

India suffered a major set back on ay 1 of the Lord’s Test after wicketkeeper-batter Rishabh Pant had to be substituted due to an injury on his hand. For the majority of the day’s play, Dhruv Jurel took over wicketkeeping duties as Rishabh Pant stayed off the field undergoing medical treatment.

While Jurel is allowed to keep wickets throughout the match in Pant’s absence, he won’t be permitted to bat if Pant is declared unfit for the rest of the game. This scenario could seriously dent India’s chances of taking a 2-1 lead in the third Test, especially given Pant’s strong performances earlier in the series.

However, the rule preventing Jurel from batting in Pant’s place has sparked debate on social media, especially after the International Cricket Council (ICC) recently updated its playing conditions to permit permanent replacements for players who suffer serious injuries during a match.

As per the ICC’s announcement last month, “A player who suffers a serious injury on the field of play at any time after the match has started (including any pre-match warm-up period) may be replaced for the remainder of the match by a fully participating like-for-like player.”

However this rule only applies for Domestic Cricket as in Test cricket Jurel won’t be allowed to replace pant as a ‘fully participating player’

The injury replacement rule in domestic cricket is set to come into effect only in October this year and will be applicable for six months. Currently, full player replacements are permitted only in cases of concussion which does not apply to Rishabh Pant’s situation.

Here’s what BCCI said on Rishabh Pant’s injury, “Team India vice-captain Rishabh Pant got hit on his left index finger. He is receiving treatment at the moment and is under the supervision of the medical team,” the board said in a post on social media.

At the end of Day 1 play, India’s all-rounder Nitish Kumar Reddy was also asked about Pant’s injury and he said, “To be honest, I just came off the field and I don’t know anything about it,” Reddy said. “I haven’t heard anything, but we will hear more Friday morning (Day 2 of the Lord’s Test) before we go back.”
