During the England tour, Team India captain Shubman Gill surprised the English bowlers with his massive batting performance. At Edgbaston, which had been a nightmare venue for India for decades, Gill struck a captain’s half-century and smashed a double century. By this remarkable achievement, he has also shattered various key historical records. Based on this single innings alone, he has overtaken great players such as Sunil Gavaskar and Mohammad Azharuddin. Let’s see the records that he has broken:

First Indian Captain to Score a Double Century in England

By completing a double century in this game, Shubman Gill is the first Indian captain to have done so on the soil of England. Before him, Mohammad Azharuddin was the record holder for the most runs scored by an Indian captain in England, who scored 179 runs in 1990 — a record for 35 years.

Largest Individual Score by an Indian in England

Gill has also established himself as the record holder for the highest individual score by an Indian batsman in England. He surpassed Sunil Gavaskar’s legendary 221-run innings back in 1979. By scoring 222 runs at Edgbaston, Gill appropriated this historic record. Prior to him, only two Indian batsmen had achieved double centuries in England — Sunil Gavaskar and the “Wall” of Indian cricket, Rahul Dravid.

Double Centuries in Both ODIs and Tests

There are very few cricketers in the history of the game who have done well in all three formats. Shubman Gill has now entered that exclusive group. With this Test double century, he has become just the second Indian batter after Rohit Sharma to score double hundreds in both ODIs and Tests, as well as a century in T20Is.

Youngest Indian Captain to Hit a Double Century

At only 25 years of age, Shubman Gill’s elevation as captain had generated a lot of questions prior to the series. Though India lost the first game under his captaincy, Shubman Gill has always left his impression with the bat. He is now the youngest Indian skipper to have scored a double hundred, which he did at the age of 25 years and 298 days. The former record was established by Mansoor Ali Khan Pataudi, who made a double hundred at 23 years and 39 days.
