This move mirrors a broader trend on social media, where thousands have also adopted black profile pictures to express their grief over the crime. Ganguly faced criticism for initially labeling the brutal incident as a “one-off” event, leading him to later issue a clarification on his stance.
“I don’t know how what I said last Sunday was construed or interpreted. I have said it earlier as well that (the crime) it’s a terrible thing. Now, the CBI (and the) police are investigating the matter. It’s very shameful what has happened,” Sourav Ganguly said.
“I hope that the CBI will soon find the culprit. The culprit should be given such a strict punishment that no one dares to commit such crime again in their life. That is important. Punishment has to be severe,” he had added.

Ganguly gave his opinion on women’s safety,
“I don’t think everything should be judged on an isolated incident. There is no room to think that everything or everyone is not safe for this (incident). Such accidents happen all over the world. It is wrong to think that girls are not safe. Not only in West Bengal, but everywhere in India, women are safe. Where we live is the best place. One should not judge by one incident,” Ganguly said.
In 2004, Sourav Ganguly received one of India’s highest civilian honors, the Padma Shri. Later, on May 20, 2013, the West Bengal Government honored him with the Banga Bibhushan award. Renowned for his left-handed batting, Ganguly is celebrated as one of the greatest ODI batsmen and a distinguished captain of the Indian Test team.
Sourav Ganguly served as the president of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) from October 2019 until October 2021.
