On This Day, November 28: The great West Indian bowling maestro, Michael Holding made his debut in the first Test of the series between Australia and the West Indies in Brisbane. Unfortunately, it wasn’t a memorable beginning for the legendary fast bowler, as he struggled with his figures of 0 for 127 in the match. The West Indies, on the other hand, were comprehensively beaten by eight wickets, and they would go on to lose the series 1-5.

Australia’s Dominant Response

Despite facing a target of 219, which could have been tricky on another day, this was long before the infamous Headingley ’81 collapse that caused Australia to struggle in the fourth innings. The Chappell brothers, Ian and Greg, played with remarkable ease, putting on an unbroken 159-run partnership for the third wicket. Greg Chappell added an unbeaten 109 to his first-innings score of 123, ensuring Australia comfortably chased down the target.

Lillee’s Unusual Figures

Dennis Lillee’s performance in the first innings was also noteworthy, as he returned the highly unusual figures of 11-0-84-3. Although the overs were eight balls, his figures still stood out. West Indies’ approach to batting on the first morning was lackluster, with Roy Fredericks managing a rapid 46 off 30 balls, but the team was ultimately bowled out for a meager 214 in just 37.5 overs.
