Virat Kohli’s Decline Since 2021: Is Spin Bowling His Kryptonite? TAKE A LOOK!

Virat Kohli has struggled against spin since 2021, highlighting a decline in performance and raising questions about his technique.

The star Indian cricketer, Virat Kohli would certainly be one of the best batters in cricket history. In the last two years, Kohli witnessed mixed-bag performances against spin bowling in Asia. It makes for interesting reading to analyze his statistics and come out with the challenges that he has faced, particularly against left-arm orthodox spin.

Kohli’s Performance Since 2021

Since 2021, Virat Kohli has batted 26 innings against spin in Asia, making 606 runs. The numbers look good, but the average of 28.85 reflects a big struggle against slow bowlers in the subcontinent.

In this period, he was dismissed 21 times; thus, it can be reflected that Kohli has not been able to play reasonable innings from legitimate starts.

Against Left-Arm Orthodox Spinners

One of the notable features of Kohli’s batting has been his vulnerability to left-arm orthodox spinners. Of his 21 dismissals, 10 have come from left-arm spinners, where he averages only 27.10. In this respect, there is a natural question about his technique and his adaptability with this particular type of bowling.

Left-arm orthodox usually presents unique challenges because of the angle at which they arrive with the ball and their ability to turn it sharply.

Slow Strike Rate: A Cause For Concern

Another concern area has been Kohli’s strike rate against spin since 2021 in Asia, which is at 49.67, saying much about Kohli- he is not as aggressive as he used to be. There seems a reason why Kohli is being cautious. It looks like perhaps he’s fearing an LBW, especially against bowlers who have troubled him the most in his career.

Requirement Of Tactical Changes

Kohli may have to make a few tactical decisions to counter-spin, more particularly left-arm orthodox. Stress on proper footwork and making use of the depth of crease would help him better counter spin.

Furthermore, proper selection of shots and playing with a clearer intent would let him score more freely without getting caught by the spinners.
