In a record-breaking and dramatic encounter during the Scotland T20 Tri-Series in Glasgow on Monday, the Netherlands defeated Nepal in a nail-biting game with an unprecedented third Super Over for the first time in the history of men’s limited-overs cricket, both T20 and ODIs.
Nepal, in pursuit of 153, was down and out before Nandan Yadav’s calm batting at the end of normal play. Yadav needed to score 16 runs off the final six balls when he hit a 4, 2, 2, and another boundary to tie the scores and take the game to a Super Over.
The Super Over drama intensified further from there. In the initial Super Over, Nepal’s Kushal Bhurtel unleashed a fierce attack on Daniel Doram, hitting two sixes and a four to score 19 runs. The Netherlands returned in kind, with Michael Levitt sixing the first ball, followed by Max O’Dowd’s telling six and four off the last two balls, taking the game to a second Super Over.

In the second Super Over, the Netherlands scored 17 runs even as Lalit Rajbanshi regained his footing following two sixes off his first three balls. Nepal was on the verge of winning the game, with Rohit Paudel hitting a six and Dipendra Airee chipping in a four. Requiring seven from the final ball, Airee hammered Kyle Klein over cow corner for a level-scorer six, which set up a third Super Over – an unprecedented event in men’s cricket.

This time around, the Dutch had the last laugh. Offspinner Zach Lion-Cachet bowled out Paudel and debutant Rupesh Singh in a double-wicket maiden, leaving Nepal stuck at 0/2. With only a single run remaining to win, Levitt ended the game in style, hitting a six off Sandeep Lamichhane over long-on.
This spine-tingling match recorded only the second time a men’s T20I has extended to a second Super Over, after India defeated Afghanistan in January 2024. Yet, with a third Super Over now under its belt, the Netherlands and Nepal match will be an epochal moment in T20 cricket.
