WTC Points Table: South Africa Move To Top Spot, Post 109-Run Over Sri Lanka In Second Test

South Africa move to top of World Test Championship points table, achieve 109 run victory against Sri Lanka in second Test played in Gqeberha.

South Africa registered a 109-run victory over Sri Lanka in the second Test played in Gqeberha. The South African team wrapped up Sri Lanka for a score of 238 runs while defending 348. South African skipper Temba Bavuma was named as the Player of the Match who played innings of 78 and 66 runs respectively. The South African team also dethroned Australia from the top spot of the World Test Championship points table and have now become favourites to play qualify for the final of the biggest ICC Test event.

Batting first, South Africa registered a score of 358 runs in which, Ryan Rickelton and Kyle Verreynne played match winning knocks. Both the batters played innings of 101 and 105* runs respectively. Apart from these two batters, Temba Bavuma showcased some brilliant form with the bat. Sri Lankan pacer Lahiru Kumara was the most successful bowler in the first innings and picked up four wickets on the other hand, Asitha Fernando picked up a three-wicket haul.

In reply, Sri Lanka showcased a decent batting approach wherein they were bowled out for 328 runs. Opener Pathum Nissanka was the top-scorer of the South African innings, who scored 89 runs from 157 balls. Other Sri Lankan batters including Dinesh Chandimal, Kamindu Mendis and captain Dhananjaya de Silva showcased collective batting efforts. Dane Peterson was the pick of the bowlers for South Africa and ended the innings with a five wicket haul.

Temba Bavuma ended up being South Africa’s top scorer in the second innings whereas Aiden Markram played an innings of 55 runs from 75 balls. Prabath Jayasuriya picked up a five-wicket haul and the visitors were setup a total of 348 runs in the second innings. Chasing down the target, Sri Lanka could only score 238 runs wherein Keshav Maharaj picked up a five-wicket haul and helped the team move to the top of the WTC points table.
