Wrestling legend Goldberg is in the news again as he comes back to WWE for his much-awaited retirement match. In last week’s episode of Raw, the all-time great superstar stormed in with a thunderous entrance, much to the excitement of the fans who ushered him in with universal support. Goldberg challenged reigning champion Gunther and gave him a straight-up challenge for a match.
This rivalry has been building since last year’s Bad Blood event, where Gunther humiliatingly embarrassed Goldberg. The tension almost broke out into all-out fistfights, but WWE authorities were able to calm things down. Rumors about the two facing each other in the ring had been on going ever since. In November, Goldberg himself had intimated that 2025 would see him enter the ring one last time. It’s now official his sendoff will be against “The Ring General” Gunther.
Goldberg’s Grit and Grind
Goldberg has been grinding tirelessly in preparation for this last fight. Even with an injury incurred during his camp period, the 58-year-old legend appears to be in top physical condition and focused. Overcoming Gunther won’t be simple but many are convinced Goldberg still possesses the necessary stuff to fashion one final upset. The chance of him overthrowing the reigning champion is real.
Before the confrontation, Goldberg went to X (formerly Twitter) to post a stunning montage video that features his return entrance on Raw as well as raw footage of his training routine. The video plainly demonstrates the amount of physical work he’s been doing, making it plain to Gunther: he’s not getting back in simply to make appearances he’s getting back in to win.
When Is Goldberg’s Retirement Match?
During Raw, Gunther took time to congratulate himself and turn his attention towards Money in the Bank champion Seth Rollins. But Goldberg had other ideas. After initially recognizing Gunther’s reign, the veteran demonstrated his hot head and officially issued the challenge.
WWE wasted no time in making it official. Gunther vs. Goldberg for the World Heavyweight Championship will top the bill on Saturday Night’s Main Event on July 12 in Atlanta, Georgia Goldberg’s hometown. The fans are eagerly anticipating a brutal and spectacular clash between the two titans.
For perspective, Goldberg last performed in WWE during Elimination Chamber 2022 when he lost to Roman Reigns. All attention is now focused on if the Hall of Famer can ultimately exit the ring on a winning note.
