Google Pumps 1B Euros into Finnish Data Center for AI Expansion

Google's investment in Finland aligns with its commitment to using renewable energy, with its existing data centre in Hamina operating with 97% carbon-free energy.

Google, owned by Alphabet, announced on Monday its plan to invest an additional 1 billion euros ($1.1 billion) in expanding its data centre campus in Finland to support the growth of its artificial intelligence (AI) business in Europe.

Google’s Focus On Nordic Countries

The Nordic countries have become popular locations for data centers due to their cooler climate, tax incentives, and abundant supply of renewable energy. While neighbouring countries Sweden and Norway have expressed concerns about hosting data centres, Finland has seen a rapid increase in wind power capacity, reaching 5,677 megawatts in 2022. This surplus of renewable energy, particularly from wind power, makes Finland an attractive location for data centre expansion.

Google’s investment in Finland aligns with its commitment to using renewable energy, with its existing data centre in Hamina operating with 97% carbon-free energy. The company cited the growing demand for AI applications as a driving factor behind its investment decision.

Furthermore, Google aims to achieve net zero emissions across its operations and value chain by 2030, demonstrating its commitment to sustainability.

In addition to the investment in Finland, Google recently announced plans to construct new data centres in the Netherlands and Belgium, further expanding its infrastructure in Europe.
