Indian billionaire businessman Balvinder Singh Sahni, also known as ‘Abu Sabah,’ has been sentenced to five years in prison for money laundering through a criminal group. According to Gulf News, the Dubai Fourth Criminal Court has ordered that 150 million Dirhams be taken from Sahni and fined him 500,000 Dirhams (about ₹1.15 crore). After finishing his sentence, Sahni will also be deported.
Sahni is the founder of RSG Group, which has businesses in the UAE, the US, and India. He became famous for buying the ‘D5’ license plate for 33 million Dirhams, one off the most expensive license plates in the Emirates. This flashy purchase showed off his wealth and luxurious lifestyle, which caught a lot of media attention.
Early Life and Business Journey
Balvinder Singh Sahni, Born on April 7, 1972, in Kuwait City, is the founder and chairman of RSG Group of companies. His company is worth billions of dirhams and works in real estate, cars, industrial equipment, and investments across the Middle East, the US, India, and South Asia.
Sahni comes from a Punjabi background. He started his business career at the age of 18, leaving his business management studies to start an auto spare parts company. Over time, his business grew and moved into real estate and hospitality.

RSG Group has completed several big projects, including:
–Qasr Sabah, a $123 million housing project in Dubai Sports City.
–Burj Sabah, a 24-floor apartment building in Jumeirah Village Circle worth $50 million.
–Sabah Rotana, a five-star hotel near Umm Suqeim.
–Jebel Ali Central Rotana, a four-star hotel near the Jebel Ali Metro Station.

Sahni became famous for his love of expensive and rare items. In 2016, he paid AED 33 million (about ₹80 crore) for the Dubai license plate “D5”. He also bought the “O9” plate for AED 24.5 million. He explained, “I like collecting unique number plates and I am proud to have got this number. I like number nine and D5 adds up to nine, so I went for it,” he said.
He also spent AED 4.5 million to buy a special mobile number.
Sahni lives in a grand $100 million mansion in Dubai. His home includes custom-made Bentley furniture and even features a Bugatti Chiron on display. His car collection includes several Rolls-Royces and a Mercedes-AMG G63. His luxury lifestyle was featured on the popular YouTube channel “Mo Vlogs.”

Aside from business, Sahni is known for helping others, especially in Punjab. After his father, Amrik Singh, passed away in 2004, he built a home for the elderly called “Apna Ghar” in Amritsar. When his mother, Harbans Kaur Sahni, died in 2007, he built a tuberculosis hospital. Later, he also built India’s largest hospital for the deaf and mute in the same area.
During the COVID-19 pandemic, Sahni gave AED 1 million to Abu Dhabi’s “Together We Are Good” program and supported fundraising for medical research.
In 2020, he received the “Businessman of the Year” award at the Sikh Awards in Dubai.
