The ISS orbits Earth at an average altitude of about 400 km (250 miles), traveling at a speed of 28,000 km/h (17,500 mph).
The ISS serves as a microgravity and space environment research laboratory where scientific research is conducted in astrobiology, astronomy, meteorology, physics, and materials science.
It consists of interconnected modules that were launched and assembled in space. It has solar panels to generate power and is equipped with living quarters for astronauts.
The ISS is a symbol of global collaboration, with over 15 nations, including NASA, JAXA, ESA, and CSA, working together on its construction, maintenance, and operation.
The ISS hosts a crew of 6 astronauts who spend six months aboard, conducting research in its unique microgravity environment that’s not possible on Earth.
Although its future beyond 2030 is uncertain, it'll continue to support scientific research, technological development, and potential commercial ventures like space tourism.
