No group has claimed responsibility as of yet for the bombing of the school. However, splinter groups of the banned Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) that are active in the Tank district are opposed to girls’ education and target their schools.

Over the last decade, local NGOs have reported that over 450 schools in the Province have been destroyed in attacks of this nature, resulting in students either no longer attending schools or attending classes next to destroyed buildings or rubble.

Until 2019, Pakistan saw repeated attacks on girls’ schools, particularly in the Swat Valley and across northwest Pakistan, including the former tribal regions where the Pakistani Taliban had a strong presence.
