Indonesia is mulling to purchase aircraft carriers from Italy. Indonesia is interested in buying aircraft carrier ITS Giuseppe Garibaldi (C 551) to strengthen its Navy’s capabilities. The aircraft was launched in 1985. This aircraft was kept in reserve after the multipurpose Landing Helicopter dock (LHD) Trieste was commissioned.
According to a report of Janes, An Italian Navy source said that the possible deal could include the transfer of AV 8B Harrier II short take-off and vertical landing (STOVL) aircraft. The report cited that if the deal takes place, it would enhance the Naval capabilities of Indonesia. It would help in (OMSP) Military Operations Other Than War like human assistance during disasters and naval security to the nation.
The requirement for a minimum essential force of Indonesia’s modernisation strategy includes at least four helicopter-carrying vessels, four frigates, and several missile patrol boats.
