Mamata Banerjee Stands United With Modi Government Amid Attacks On Bangladeshi Hindus

West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has expressed her support for the central government in addressing the recent violence against Hindus in Bangladesh, particularly following the arrest of ISKCON monk Chinmoy Krishna Das.

Following the arrest of Chinmoy Krishna Das Brahmachari, an ISKCON monk, and the escalating attacks on Hindus in Bangladesh have sparked strong reactions from Indian leaders including West Bengal CM, with calls for urgent intervention from Prime Minister and international organizations.

“We do not want any religion to be harmed. I have spoken to ISKCON here, and since this involves another country, the Central government must take appropriate action. We stand with them on this issue.” said West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee in the state legislative assembly on Thursday,

The arrest of ISKCON monk Chinmoy Krishna Das Brahmachari on Monday near Dhaka’s Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport, amid ongoing attacks on religious minorities, has further escalated tensions.

Union Minister Giriraj Singh also condemned the attacks, blaming Bangladesh’s interim government for being “in the clutches of fundamentalists.” He called on the United Nations to intervene, describing the violence against Hindus and the arrest of religious leaders as “inhumane and unacceptable.”

India’s Ministry of External Affairs expressed “deep concern” over the denial of bail to the monk, urging Bangladesh to ensure the safety of its minority communities.

Opposition leaders, however, have criticized the government’s response. Congress leader Gaurav Gogoi questioned Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s diplomatic efforts, asking, “Why is the Prime Minister silent while Hindus in Bangladesh face persecution?”
