In an official memo, Meta has planned a wide layoff in many countries except Germany, France, Italy, and the Netherlands due to local regulations. According to reports, the layoffs have begun because the company is set to hire machine learning engineers.
In one of the memos, Janelle Gale, head of people at Meta, stated that workers in Germany, France, Italy, and the Netherlands will be exempt from the layoffs due to local regulations. However, employees in over a dozen other countries across Europe, Asia, and Africa will receive their notifications between February 11 and February 18, the memo mentioned, according to Reuters.
Last month, Meta also confirmed that they are planning to lay off five percent of the lowest performers. This memo was described as performance termination. Meta is laying off over 3,000 employees while citing the procedure as raising the bar on performance and removing underperformers.

Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg has already cautioned that 2024 and 2025 will be challenging years for the company.
“Unlike previous large-scale layoffs, Meta planned to keep its offices open on Monday and would not issue additional updates regarding the decisions,” Gale mentioned in her post.
In a separate memo, the company also urged employees to support the hiring process for machine learning and other critical engineering positions.
