“This award reflects the eternal and deep friendship between our countries. I accept this honour as a collective pride on behalf of 140 crore people of India. To confer this award upon the first foreign leader reflects our deep relationship, which is based on common history and culture,” said PM Modi after being conferred with the highest civilian award.

PM Modi Highlights Shared Heritage

To highlight the shared history and cultural ties between India and Trinidad and Tobago, PM Modi traced President Kangaloo’s roots ancestral roots back to India. He added that Kangaloo’s ancestors came from the land of Saint Thiruvalluvar, Tamil Nadu, who taught that strong nations must possess six key qualities.

PM Modi said, “President Christine Kangaloo’s ancestors were from the land of Saint Thiruvalluvar, Tamil Nadu. Thousands of years ago, Saint Thiruvalluvar stated that strong nations should possess six key qualities: a strong army, patriotic people, abundant resources, effective leadership, robust defence, and friendly nations that always stand together. Trinidad and Tobago is such a friendly country for India.”

PM Modi further spoke about vibrant cultural connection shared by India and the Caribbean nation, stating “there is the thrill of cricket and the spice of pepper in our relations.” He asserted that the cooperation between the two countries is extremely important for the Global South. PM Modi affirmed the strong friendship and their shared commitment to work together for the welfare of their people.

“There is the thrill of cricket and the spice of pepper in our relations… Deep harmony between two cultures is a great strength of our relations. As a close and trusted partner, we have been emphasising skill development and capacity building of the people of Trinidad and Tobago… Our cooperation is important for the entire Global South. As two vibrant democracies, we will continue to work together for the welfare of the people,” he added.

President Kangaloo also expressed happiness on bestowing the highest honour to PM Modi. In her address, she thanked PM Modi for always showing generosity to Trinidad and Tobago during difficult times. She highlighted that India had sent 40 thousand doses of COVID-19 vaccines when the country was hit by the pandemic.

Kangaloo said, “Trinidad and Tobago is immensely glad to have been able to bestow upon you our nation’s highest honour in recognition of the tremendous work that you have done with our nation over the years and for the kindness and the generosity which you have always shown to our country and indeed our region.

“Your kindness and generosity to the people of Trinidad and Tobago are legendary. They have been shown time and time again, including as we have heard during the crisis of the COVID-19 pandemic, when 40 thousand doses of COVID-19 vaccines arrived in Trinidad as a result of your personal intervention and action. That act of kindness only further strengthened the longstanding relationship between the two countries,” she added.
