Islamabad: Clashes erupted in Pakistan after Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) workers started protests against the election commission’s decision to disqualify former prime minister and PTI chief Imran Khan in the Toshakhana case.

Following the announcement of the verdict, chaotic scenes were witnessed outside the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) office where enraged PTI workers converged in large numbers, chanting slogans against the government, reports Geo News.

During the protests, the police arrested PTI MNA Saleh Muhammad and his guard from the ECP office.

The situation became tense after KP police opened fire on capital police deployed outside the ECP office to neutralise the situation, however it only backfired, ARY News reported.

Moreover, the PTI workers have blocked roads and streets to protest. According to local media, the workers have set ablaze tyres and blocked traffic in Islamabad, Rawalpindi and other cities of Pakistan.

The agitators also raised slogans against PTI Chairman Imran Khan’s disqualification.

In its verdict on Imran Khan on Friday, the electoral watchdog, ECP stated that Imran Khan submitted a false affidavit and was found involved in corrupt practices.

Pakistan ECP disqualifies Imran Khan for 5 years

The ECP, in its verdict in Toshakhana reference, disqualified former prime minister Imran Khan for five years and ruled that the Pakistan Tehreek-e- Insaf (PTI) chairman is no more a member of the National Assembly.

The ECP stated that Imran Khan submitted a false affidavit and was found involved in corrupt practices.

Criminal proceedings will be initiated against the PTI chairman for misdeclaration, the verdict said.
