His comments come after reports Afghanistan’s Taliban rulers on Tuesday banned female students from attending universities.

The decision, according to a news agency AP report, was annnounced after a meeting on Tuesday.

A letter shared by the spokesman for the Ministry of Higher Education, Ziaullah Hashmi, told private and public universities to implement the ban as soon as possible and to inform the ministry once the ban is in place, the report said.

UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres condemned the decision and said ‘it will have a devastating impact on the country’s future’.

“I am deeply shocked by reports that the Taliban have suspended women and girls’ access to universities. The denial of education violates equal rights and will have a devastating impact on the country’s future,” Guterres tweeted.
