If you are planning to submit SAT scores to a university through early action deadlines, you must ideally complete your SAT exam registration before December. For regular decision deadlines, taking the SAT by March is recommended. These SAT test registration dates are scheduled on Saturdays, but a special Sunday test date is available in select regions for students unable to take the test on a Saturday.

How to Register for the SAT?

But make sure that SAT registration is done online for the Digital SAT, and this is already offered at the College Board site. Why not try to register for the SAT?

Step 1: Create a College Board Account

Start your registration process for the SAT by visiting the College Board website and signing up to create a new account in the new registration section. This will grant you access to all your SAT Test registrations and scores. Fill in the information concerning yourself accurately. Note that on test day, the same name should appear on your photo ID.

Step 2: Choose Your Test Date & Center

Go to the registration system, sign in to it, and then begin by selecting your SAT test-day and venue. Availability of dates and centers generally changes during peak seasons due to high demand, and so it is recommended that you finalize your registration early to secure your choice of date and location. The SAT portal will offer the details pertaining to the list of available test centers depending on your current location.

Step 3: Fill Out Your High School Information

When you sign up, you will be required to indicate the current high school you attend. This makes the College Board aware of the good carriers of your educational records, and that has led to the procedure of score release.

Step 4: Upload a Photo

You’ll need to upload a recent photograph of yourself as an identity in your registration form. Your admission ticket will include this photo which will be used to check your identity and confirm your entry into the exam hall.

You must keep in mind:

  • If a message says that your upload is successful means that your photo has the correct file type and size. It doesn't mean that your photo meets all other requirements.
  • Photos should be in one of the following formats: .jpg, .gif, or .png. You will have an opportunity to crop and reposition your photo after uploading.

If you upload a photo that doesn't meet the requirements below, you will not be admitted to take the SAT -

  • You’re the only one in the picture.
  • It’s a head and shoulders view, with the entire face, both eyes, and hair clearly visible. 
  • Head coverings worn for religious purposes are okay.
  • You’re in focus.
  • There are no dark spots or shadows.
  • Black and white photos are acceptable
  • One or both of your eyes aren’t visible or are blocked (for example, you’re wearing sunglasses).
  • The photo includes more than one person.
  • Poor image quality that makes you unrecognizable.
  • Excessive lighting or shadows make you unrecognizable.
  • You’re wearing a hat or head covering that isn’t worn for religious purposes.
  • Your photo has been digitally altered to change your appearance (including filters) or tampered with in any way.

Step 5: Link to the College Board's Student Search Service

You also have an option to opt in for the College Board's Student Search Service, which connects you with colleges and scholarship programs searching for students just like you. Once you become a member, you will get the opportunity to hear from 1,900+ 4-year colleges and partners offering scholarships totaling up to $300 million annually.

Step 6: Registration Fee

Make your registration complete via test fee payment for the SAT. The SAT portal does offer payment through various modes: by credit cards, PayPal, and so on. Fee-waiver alternatives do exist for students who would be eligible under defined criteria.

Step 7: Print Your Admission Ticket

Once you have registered, print your Admission Ticket. Keep it for the test day, along with appropriate photo identification. You will not be able to take the digital SAT without it.

Eligibility for SAT Fee Waivers

Students from low income households can avail fee waivers on their SAT Registration fee. Such students must be 11th or 12th grade students with US citizenship. You will be eligible to receive a SAT fee waiver if –

  • You’re enrolled in the Federal National School Lunch Program, you qualify for a fee waiver.
  • Your family’s annual income falls within the Income Eligibility Guidelines set by the USDA Food and Nutrition Service.
  • You’re enrolled in a federal, state, or local program that supports students from low-income families, such as TRIO programs like Upward Bound.
  • Your family receives public assistance, such as food stamps or welfare benefits.
  • You’re unhoused, live in federally subsidized public housing, or reside in a foster home.

What Is the Eligibility Required To Take SAT?

There are no specific criteria for SAT eligibility set by the College Board. Students planning to apply to undergraduate programs—especially abroad—can begin SAT exam registration. High schoolers, usually in their junior or senior year, are the primary candidates. Even students under 13 can register with the help of a parent or guardian. There are no eligibility limitations for SAT registration in 2025.

SAT Registration FAQs

The SAT registration fee for students in the United States as mentioned by the College Board is $68. For international students, there is an additional fee of $43.

The next upcoming SAT registration date for SAT exam is on August 23, 2025 for which the registration deadline is August 8, 2025.

If you wish to change your test centre location after filling the SAT registration form, you will be charged an additional fee of $29.
