Concept:

Rivets:

  • Rivets are used to join together two or more sheets of metal permanently.
  • In sheet metal work riveting is done where:
    • brazing is not suitable
    • the structure changes owing to welding heat
    • the distortion due to welding cannot be easily removed etc.
  • Rivets are made of ductile materials like low carbon sheet (mild steel), brass, copper, yellow brass, aluminum are their alloys.

Shearing area of riveted joint = n ×

Where n = Number of rivets, d = diameter of the rivet

Calculation:

Given:

n = 10, d = 4 mm

∵ Shearing area of riveted joint = n ×

⇒ Shearing area of riveted joint = 10 ×

⇒ Shearing area of riveted joint = 40π
