Answer (Detailed Solution Below)
Detailed Solution
Download Solution PDFGiven:
Winning candidate's percentage of valid votes = 54%
Votes won by = 88 votes
Invalid votes = 58 votes
Formula used:
Let the total number of valid votes be V.
Votes of the winning candidate = 54% of V
Votes of the losing candidate = 46% of V
Difference in votes = 54% of V - 46% of V
Total number of votes polled = Valid votes + Invalid votes
Calculations:
Difference in votes = 88 votes
⇒ 0.54V - 0.46V = 88
⇒ 0.08V = 88
⇒ V = 88 / 0.08
⇒ V = 1100
Total number of votes polled = Valid votes + Invalid votes
⇒ Total number of votes polled = 1100 + 58
⇒ Total number of votes polled = 1158
∴ The total number of votes polled in the election is 1158.
