- As a young governor in his youth years, he ignored the Maratha problem.
- However, as a king in his last 25 years, he shifted all his focus towards his Deccan policy.
- His Deccan policy involved controlling Hindu Maratha rulers and Muslim Bijapur and Golconda rulers by cutting them off from each other.
- In 1686 he conquered Bijapur and in the following year, he conquered Golconda.
- He could not conquer the Maratha territory but managed to capture and execute Sambhaji.
- However, even by the end of his life, he could not subdue the Marathas.
- He died on 3rd March 1707.
