Hysteresis loss is a type of energy loss which occurs in Electrical machines due to the repeated magnetization and demagnetization of the iron core.
Due to the flow of alternating current, the iron core gets magnetized and demagnetized in each cycle and during each cycle of magnetization, some energy is lost.
Hysteresis loss occurring in a material is,
\({W_h} = KfB_m^{η}\)
\({W_h} = \eta \times B_m^{1.6} \times f \times V\)
Where,

η is Steinmetz's constant

V is the volume of the core

f is supply frequency

Bm is magnetic flux density
The energy loss associated with hysteresis is proportional to the area of the hysteresis loop. As the area of the hysteresis loop for a specimen is found to be large, the hysteresis loss in this specimen is also large.
