Given :

20% of the registered voters did not cast their vote.

40 votes were declared invalid.

Winner got 42% of the registered votes.

Declared the winner by 112 votes.

Calculation :

Let the total number of voters be 100x.

Voters not casting their vote = 20x

No of valid votes = 80x - 40

No of votes of winner = 42x

No of votes of looser = 38x - 40

Difference of voted between winner and looser = 42x - (38x - 40) = 112

⇒ 4x + 40 = 112

⇒ 4x = 72

⇒ x = 18

So, Number of registered voters = 18 × 100 = 1800

∴ The correct answer is Rs.1800.
