- In the Rutherford's Alpha Scattering Experiment, a beam of α-particles was made to fall on a thin gold foil. These particles then deflected in different directions and were detected by an α-particle detector.
- The following observations were made:
- Most α-particles passed through the gold foil without suffering any deflection.
- In passing through the foil, particles suffered different amounts of deflection.
- While most of the particles suffered fewer deflections, a small number of particles suffered defections of nearly 180 °, practically retracing their paths, because the positive charge is concentrated at the center.
- From this experiment he had concluded that almost all mass is concentrated at the center of an atom which was later termed as Nucleus.
EXPLANATION:
- Rutherford’s alpha-particle scattering experiment was responsible for the discovery of Nucleus.
