The Seventh Schedule of the Constitution of India defines and specifies the allocation of powers and functions between States and the Union.
The schedule contains three lists - Union List, State List, and Concurrent list.
- The Union List originally had 97 subjects. Now, it has 100 subjects. The centre has exclusive powers to make laws on the subjects mentioned in this list.
- The State List has 61 subjects now, It had 66 subjects initially. State legislatures can make laws on the subjects mentioned in this list.
- The Concurrent List has 52 subjects enumerated under it. Both the State as well as the Central Government can make laws mentioned on this list.
