Originating from the class Asteroidea, starfish are echinoderms that have been around for over 450 million years. While most species sport 5 arms, others like the Antarctic Labidiaster can have more than 50. The Giant Sea Star ( Pisaster giganteus ) is another interesting species that can grow up to 24 inches in diameter. Despite their slow pace, starfish are aggressive predators, often causing extensive damage to coral reefs.
