It is a structure that the government must follow and so do the common man. Article 69 of the Constitution deals with oath or affirmation by the Vice-President. Interpretation of Article 69 of Indian Constitution

Article 69 of the Constitution states - “Every Vice-President shall, before entering upon his office, make and subscribe before the President, or some person appointed in that behalf by him, an oath or affirmation in the following form, that is to say - I, A.B., do swear in the name of God/solemnly affirm that I will bear true faith, and allegiance to the Constitution of India as by law established and that I will faithfully discharge the duty upon which I am about to enter.”

According to Article 69 the Vice-President must take an oath or make an affirmation before assuming the office. The prescribed form of the oath includes -

  • a pledge to uphold true faith
  • allegiance to the Constitution of India
  • to diligently carry out the responsibilities of the office

The oath or affirmation of the Vice-President is administered by the President or by someone authorized by the President.
