Roman Numerals: Numbers used in ancient Rome were Roman numerals, which were made up of letters from the Latin alphabet (I, V, X, L, C, D and M). The symbols are arranged in numerous combinations and in different orders to represent numbers. After then, the symbols are joined together, for example, I + I + I equals III. We add X (10) and I (1) to make 11 and write it as XI. We can use XXV Roman Numerals to denote 25.

XXV Roman Numeral By Expansion Method

To use this method, calculate the value of each numeral and add it to find the final value.

Value of XXV roman numeral = 10+10+5 = 25

XXV Roman Numeral By Grouping Method

In this system, the numerical values of groups of letters are considered for addition.

Value of XXV roman numeral = (XX) + (V) = 20 + 5 = 25

This was done for XXV roman numeral in numbers. You can follow the same steps for any number.

Rules for Roman Numerals

A set of seven symbols makes up all roman numerals. The roman numeral system has four fundamental rules to observe. We’ll learn about them and how to use them in this part.

Rule 1: If a symbol comes after itself, it’s added.

For example,

CC = 100 + 100 = 200

CCLXXX = 100 + 100 + 50 + 10 + 10 + 10 = 270

Rule 2: When a smaller symbol is after a greater symbol, it’s added.

For example,

XIII = 10 + 3 = 13

Rule 3: The same symbol cannot be used more than three times in a row.

For example,

XXX = 10 + 10 + 10 = 30, but 40 is not XXXX. 40 is XL.

CCC = 100 + 100 + 100 = 300, but 400 is not CCCC. 400 is CD.

Rule 4: When a smaller symbol appears before a greater symbol, it is subtracted.

For example,

XIX = 20 – 1 = 19

XXL= 50 – 20 = 30

CM = 1000 – 100 = 900

XXV Roman Numeral Translation

We can convert XXV roman numerals to numbers by using a few simple rules. Take a close look at this roman numeral.

XXV

Find the value of each symbol in a roman numeral and then add or subtract these values to convert them to digits.

Let’s start by determining the value of each symbol.

X – 10

X – 10

V – 5

This is due to the fact that such numbers must be added (Rule 2).

Rule 2 says that ‘When a smaller symbol is after a greater symbol, it’s added.’

Let’s now add the values.

XXV = 10+10+5

So, what is this roman numeral’s value?

Correct!

XXV = 25

Roman Numerals by Grouping Method

Roman numerals are a way of writing numbers using letters from the Latin alphabet. The main Roman numeral symbols are:

  • I = 1

  • V = 5

  • X = 10

  • L = 50

  • C = 100

  • D = 500

  • M = 1000

The grouping method is a simple way to read Roman numerals by adding the values of the letters when they appear from largest to smallest.

For example:

  • XX means 10 + 10 = 20

  • XXV means 10 + 10 + 5 = 25

  • LXX means 50 + 10 + 10 = 70

When the symbols are written in decreasing order, you just add them.

However, if a smaller number comes before a bigger one, we subtract. This happens in special cases:

  • IV means 5 - 1 = 4

  • IX means 10 - 1 = 9

But in the grouping method, we mostly look at letters from biggest to smallest and add their values. It’s like stacking number blocks to reach the total.

Examples:

  • XXX = 10 + 10 + 10 = 30

  • CXX = 100 + 10 + 10 = 120

How to write XXV Roman Numeral in Words?

We must first convert XXV roman numerals to numbers before we can translate them into words. That has already been accomplished in above sections. The number 25 is represented by the roman numeral XXV. Let’s put it into words now. First, find out the places of the digits.

Tens: 2

Ones: 5

Now, we will expand the number by adding a 0 to the tens place digit and its addition with the digit in one place.

Thus, we get the expanded form of XXV Roman Numerals in numbers as

20 + 5.

Now we’ll give each number its name. We all know that 20 equals twenty and 5 equals five. In English, XXV Roman Numerals equals twenty-five. This was done in words for XXV roman numerals. You can repeat the process for any number.

  • MLXXXIX + MCDXXXIX
  • MCMXCV + XXXVIII
  • CMXVI + DCXCIV
  • MD + MDIII
  • CXLIX + MM
  • CCII + CCCXXII
  • CCXCVII + MMLIX
  • CDXX + MMCCLXIX
  • CMLX + MDLXI
  • MDXLIII + MMCDLIV

Solutions

  • MLXXXIX + MCDXXXIX = 1089 + 1439 = 2528
  • MCMXCV + XXXVIII = 1995 + 38 = 2033
  • CMXVI + DCXCIV = 916 + 694 = 1610
  • MD + MDIII = 1500 + 1503 = 3003
  • CXLIX + MM = 149 + 2000 = 2199
  • CCII + CCCXXII = 202 + 372 = 574
  • CCXCVII + MMLIX = 297 + 2059 = 2356
  • CDXX + MMCCLXIX = 420 + 2269 = 2689
  • CMLX + MDLXI = 960 + 1561 = 2521
  • MDXLIII + MMCDLIV = 1543 + 2454 = 3997

Solved Example 2: Convert the following Roman Numbers into Integers.

  • LXII
  • MMXCI

Solution:

LXII

Explanation: L = 50, X= 10, III = 2.

LXII = 50 + 10 +2.

LXII = 62.

MMXCI

Explanation: M = 1000, M = 1000, XC = 90 and I = 1.

MMXCI= 1000 + 1000 + 90 + 1

MMXCI = 2091.

Solved Example 3: Find out the Roman Numerals for the following: CDIV and

XX¯

Solution:

C = 100 is less than D = 500, so subtract the values.

CD = 500 – 100 = 400

I = 1 is less than V = 5, so subtract the values.

IV = 5 – 1 = 4

Add the values.

CDIV = CD + IV = 400 + 4 = 404

CDIV = 404

XX = 20

Since it has a bar line on top, multiply the value by 1000.

= 20 × 1000 = 20000

= 20000

Roman numerals follow specific rules. XVX is not valid because Roman numerals do not allow subtractive combinations to be used improperly. The correct way to write 25 is XXV, by adding 10 + 10 + 5.

Repetition is allowed for I, X, C, and M up to three times (e.g., XX = 20). V, L, and D are never repeated. If a smaller value comes before a larger one, it is subtracted (e.g., IV = 4). If a smaller or equal value comes after, it is added (e.g., XXV = 10 + 10 + 5).
