Culpable homicide

• Culpable homicide is the act of deliberately causing the death of another person in a manner that constitutes an offense falling short of murder. According to Section 299 of the Indian Penal Code, culpable homicide is punishable with either imprisonment for life or imprisonment between 10 to 20 years and a fine if death is caused without intention to kill the victim in the heat of passion, resulting from grave and sudden provocation. 
• If death is caused with the intention of causing death or with the intention of causing such bodily harm, which is likely to result in death, the offense is classified as murder. It covers killings ranging from murder to accidental manslaughter. 

Murder

• Murder is defined under Section 300 of the Indian Penal Code. As per this section, when an individual causes the death of another person with the intention of causing death or with the intention of causing such bodily injury, which is very likely to cause death, then it is considered murder. 
• There are exceptions to murder as well, like acts done in good faith by a public servant, grave and sudden provocation, consumption of marriageable age, private defense, etc. The punishment for murder is either life imprisonment or death penalty. Premeditated killings are murder. 
• Exceptions include justified killings in self-defense. Murder warrants life imprisonment or execution. Culpable homicide lacks premeditation or malign intent compared to murder.

Dowry death

• Dowry death refers to the death of a woman caused by burns or bodily injury or occurs under abnormal circumstances within seven years of marriage, and soon before her death, her husband or relatives subjected her to cruelty in connection with demands for dowry. 
• It is classified as culpable homicide under Section 304B of the Indian Penal Code. Section 304B was introduced in the IPC to curb the menace of dowry deaths in India. 
• The punishment in such cases may extend to 7 years and a fine. Dowry death is an aggravating factor that can elevate culpable homicide to murder, inviting harsh punishment.

Hurt

• Any act that causes a person bodily pain, disease, or infirmity is termed as 'hurt' under the Indian Penal Code (Section 319 to Section 338). There are different types of hurt offenses like voluntarily causing hurt, grievous hurt, hurt by dangerous weapons, etc. 
• Exceptions are provided for these in the form of consent, private defense, correction by authority, etc. The punishment for hurt ranges from simple imprisonment up to 6 months or a fine of up to 1,000 rupees to life imprisonment or a fine or both.

Wrongful confinement and restraint

• Wrongful confinement, as defined under Section 340 of the IPC, refers to the confinement of a person without lawful authority, which obstructs that person from proceeding in any direction in which that person has a right to proceed. Wrongful restraint, as defined under Section 341, involves restraining a person from proceeding beyond certain circumscribing limits without lawful authority. 
• Punishment for wrongful confinement ranges from simple imprisonment up to one year or a fine of up to 1,000 rupees or both. At the same time, the punishment for wrongful restraint is simple imprisonment for up to one month or a fine of up to 500 rupees or both.

Harassment

• Harassment refers to persistently disturbing someone in a way that causes alarm, annoys, or distresses them. Harassment may involve following, contacting, or spying on victims. 
• Under Section 504, harassment is punishable by imprisonment for up to 3 months, a fine, or both.

Criminal force

• Criminal force is defined under Section 350 of the IPC as the use of assault or criminal force on any person in attempting wrongfully to confine that person or with intent to commit an offense. 
• The punishment ranges from simple imprisonment for up to three months or a fine of up to 500 rupees or both.

Kidnapping and abduction

• Kidnapping is defined under Section 359, and abduction under Section 362. The basic difference is that kidnapping involves taking a person away by force or deception, against their will, while abduction involves taking away a person from their lawful guardian against their will or without such guardian's consent. 
• The punishments for kidnapping and abduction range from 7 years imprisonment and fine to life imprisonment and fine.

Sexual offenses

• Various sexual offenses against women are defined under the Indian Penal Code, ranging from assault to rape. These include sexual harassment, sexual assault, stalking, etc. The most serious sexual offense defined under Section 375 is rape, punishable with imprisonment from not less than seven years to life imprisonment.
• There are many offenses defined against the human body under the Indian Penal Code, ranging from culpable homicide and murder to sexual offenses. The punishments for such offenses vary based on the gravity and severity of the crime.
