  • A nuclear reaction is a process in which two nuclei, or more nuclei and other external subatomic particles collide with each other and form one or more new nuclei. 

Explanation:

For the nuclear reaction

92X234 + β + α → Y + γ + 2β+

  • α (alpha) particle is a positively charged particle with 2 protons and 2 neutrons. It is represented as 2He4 or 2α4.
  • β (beta) particle is negatively charged. It is represented as -1e0. Whereas β+ (positron) particle is a positively charged species and represented as 1e0. γ particle has no charge.
  • So, for the nuclear reaction

92X234 + β + α → Y + γ + 2β+

  • The reaction can be represented as

92X234 + -1e02He4 → 91Y238 + 0γ0 + 2 ​1e0

  • When 92X234 nuclei collide with -1e0 and 2He4 nuclei, the mass number and atomic number increase by 4 and 1 units. The mass number and the atomic number of resulting nuclei will be

=234+4 =238,
and the atomic number will be
=92+1 =93.
