Diversion head works like Weir or barrage is constructed across a perennial river to raise water level and to divert the water to canal, is known as diversion head work Flow of water in the canal is controlled by canal head regulator. It controls the entry of silt into canals and provides some poundage by creating small pond.
Components of Diversion headwork are as follows:
1) Canal head regulator
- A canal head regulator is provided at the head of each main canal off taking from diversion headwork.
- It should be so aligned that its axis makes an angle of 90 to 120° with the axis of weir or parallel to the divide wall as shown in the figure.
- A head sluices or canal head regulator (CHR) is provided at the head of the off-taking canal, and serves the following functions:
- It controls the entry of silt in the canal.
- It regulates the supply of water entering the canal.
- It prevents the river floods from entering the canal.
The maximum uplift under the worst condition is that canal runs dry and the river flow is at high flood level.
